Proposal:

“Design is a way of life, a point of view. It involves the whole complex of visual communications: talent, creative ability, manual skill, and technical knowledge. Aesthetics and economics, technology and psychology are intrinsically related to the process.” -Paul Rand

The concept idea for this unit of work is to create a collection of editorial make-up and hair works in which each will be solely based on a particular design movement. Design movements such as Bahaus, Art Noveau and Deconstructivism will be researched in material, meaning, shape and form to provide specialist knowledge and identify imagination into how these elements can be transferred through hair and make-up design to fit a contemporary editorial style outcome. (LO1) The body of work will be incorporating a level six standard of techniques in wefting/wig making and prosthetics with the idea of using the body as a ‘canvas’ to incorporate materials in which are unique and identify the design movement. Research will also study into make-up artists and photographers such as Roshar, Alex Box, Tim Walker and Rankin to help inspire a contextual outcome. To manage time in both practical and theoretical study through the project a weekly plan will be created to balance time effectively and professionally. A budget of £350 has been created for the project to cover resources and materials needed throughout the project in which will be identified through a budget breakdown sheet. (LO2). The body of work will be an editorial photo shoot in collaboration with a photographer and models to produce a professional standard of work. A video of the process of make-up and hair application will also be included to highlight documentation of the unit. (LO3). Research will be identifying editorial content in magazines such as ID and Atlas to investigate how the use of composition of imagery has helped frame hair and make-up to be a strong focal point to the pieces. This will help create the final pieces to look appropriate and fitting to context in which can be enabled to used as strong portfolio pieces ready for interviews in the industry. (LO4)

Assessment Requirements:

The main body of work will consist of a blog in which will demonstrate the process of the project throughout with the use of research and technical skills being used in the project. There will also be thorough annotation throughout the blog to critique and demonstrate self-awareness. The blog will have appropriate research to investigate theory work, materials and techniques. A design and material logbook will also be required to show samples and make-up designs for the project. A time-lapse video will also be handed in, filming the process of the creation of the final outcome that will also relate to LO1.To meet LO2 a scheduled work plan will be created to show evidence of managing time effectively throughout the project. Tutorial records will also be inserted to help identify project solutions to fit LO3 to identify project development.

Photographic evidence of the overall final piece will be handed in to show how this will look in the artists’ professional portfolio. Along with these elements there will be a 1500 word evaluation in which will evaluate the project and final outcome to fit LO1 and LO4. LO4 will also be addressed by working on models and photographers to show identification of being professional practitioner. A health and safety checklist will also be incorporated in order to be aware of any health and safety concerns. These submissions will be able to demonstrate the ability to self criticise and identify the understanding of solutions and tasks that will be needed to be applied into the major project.
